Claude Osteen(4-4) was solid if not spectacular. He went 7 and 2/3 innings
surrendering 9 hits and 2 walks. Jim Brewer pitched a perfect ninth to earn
his 6th save.

Denny Lemaster(5-4) was the losing pitcher. 'I had a little blister on my

hits.

Tug McGraw recorded the save, his 4th. Bill Hands(4-4) was given the loss.
He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings. Gentry was humble when questioned
about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches this
afternoon. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was
called. That was an extremely well called game!'

24,508 fans were treated to a fine game at Busch Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

St. Louis came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2
runs. After two were out Richie Allen kicked off the action when he drew a
walk. Joe Torre came next and he smashed a two-run homer (his 7th of the
season). Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down
the rally.

Sal Campisi(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Campisi
got help from Chuck Taylor who earned his 3rd save. Bruce Dal Canton(1-1)
suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk in 2 innings.

'Some losses are harder to take than others' Danny Murtaugh lamented after the

Second baseman Dave Campbell cracked a homer and had 3 RBI at San Diego
Stadium as the San Diego Padres staged a comeback win over the San Francisco
Giants by the count of 6 to 5.

San Diego had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2
hits. Ed Spiezio started the inning off right when he was hit by a pitch.
After an out was recorded, Nate Colbert came to the plate and was hit by a
pitch. Tommy Dean then slapped a single to load the bases. Campbell
followed and he drew a walk which scored a run. Clarence Gaston stepped into
the box and lined a base-hit giving San Diego the win much to the delight of
the home town crowd. Although they lost, San Francisco did out-hit San Diego
13 to 8.

Linzy(2-1) took the loss in relief. 'That was exciting!,' Campbell said. 'I
would have paid money to watch this one.'
