the Houston Astros beat the Atlanta Braves 5 to 4.

Menke had a good evening at the plate. He banged out a single in the 2nd
inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 5th of the season) in the 4th
inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 7th inning and tripled which plated
a run in the 9th inning. Houston had 12 hits for the night.

Larry Dierker(8-5) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Jim Ray
recorded the save, his 1st. Jim Nash(6-7) was charged with the loss. He
surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

innings.

Jim Merritt(12-4) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Don
Sutton(8-5) absorbed the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 10 hits and 1

to win over the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 8 to 7 at Crosley Field.

Los Angeles came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning scoring 4 runners on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Billy
Grabarkewitz who silenced the crowd when he doubled plating two runs. The
game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.

Jim Brewer(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 1
run. Wayne Granger(2-3) ended up with the loss in relief.

'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Granger said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'

Bob Veale delivered 8 solid innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Montreal Expos by a score of 1 to 0 at Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh won the game with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Richie
Hebner doubled. Bill Mazeroski stepped into the batter's box and he laid
down a sacrifice bunt. Freddie Patek then hit a sacrifice fly scoring the
run. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The winning pitcher was Veale(9-4) who allowed no runs in 8 innings. Dave
Giusti gained credit for his 8th save. Rich Nye(1-1) absorbed the loss. He
was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Danny Murtaugh said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'

SAN FRANCISCO AT SAN DIEGO

In a tight game it was the San Francisco Giants 8, the San Diego Padres 6 at
San Diego Stadium.

In the top of the 2nd inning San Francisco went on top for good when they
scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Ken Henderson who silenced
the stadium when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his
12th of the season). San Francisco had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Skip Pitlock(1-1) went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory. Don
McMahon gained credit for his 10th save. Pat Dobson(4-8) was given the loss.
He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

This win by San Francisco continues their recent hot streak. In their last
ten games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 38-28. San
Diego has a record of 21-50, worst in the division after the loss.

but Chicago was able to put down the rally.

Holtzman got help from Hank Aguirre who was credited with his 2nd save. Steve
Carlton(1-9) took the loss. 'It was a tough one to lose' said Red
Schoendienst 'We'll get them next time out.'

as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs by the count of 6 to 1.

St. Louis took the lead off Jim Colborn in the first inning when they scored 3
runs on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Gibson(11-2) and
St. Louis. That was all the run support Gibson required. St. Louis had 13
hits for the afternoon.

Colborn(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 10 hits and no walks in 7
innings. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 29-34. Chicago has a
