ALCS Opener Goes to Birds

At Metropolitan Stadium the Baltimore Orioles outscored the Minnesota Twins 7
to 4.
 
Baltimore brought 6 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning when
they had 5 base hits.  The key at-bat was by Ellie Hendricks who quieted the
crowd when he smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the season).  Both teams
totaled 9 hits on the afternoon.  
 
Mike Cuellar(1-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Eddie
Watt gained credit for his 1st save.  Jim Perry(0-1) ended up with the loss.

Hall Tosses No-No

Using just 98 pitches while striking out 11, Minnesota's Tom Hall continued to mow down American League hitters and no-hit the Oakland A's at Metropolitan Stadium as the Twins downed the A's, 2-0. Jim Hunter was the tough luck loser. The win also reduced Minnesota's magic number to four as they close in on their second consecutive AL West Division crown.

Minnesota fans certainly got their money's worth at Metropolitan Stadium.  Tom
Hall(16-3) pitched a rare no-hitter as the Minnesota Twins toppled the
Oakland Athletics 2 to 0.
 
The partisan crowd cheered every Oakland out from the 7th inning on.  He had
excellent control, walking only one.  The tension started to build around the
6th inning.  By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified.  Hall struckout 11
Oakland batters.  Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.  
 
The loss was charged to Jim Hunter(10-17).  After the game, Hall was heard to
say, 'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to
have it come true is just amazing!'

Mets and Pirates keep pace

September 5, 1970

With New York visiting Wrigley Field and the Pirates hosting Philadelphia at shiny new Three Rivers Stadium, both teams took care of business in Friday and Saturday affairs to keep the Mets two games up in the only remaining pennant race of the 1970 season.

In Friday's afternoon affair, the Mets broke out with a six run second inning and never looked back, holding on by a 9-5 count. Donn Clendenon struck the big blow with a three run blast (24) to make the score 8-3 off Chicago starter Bill Hands (8-13), who has had a disappointing season that has hindered the Cubbies chance to stay in contention. Nolan Ryan (5-9) was erratic over 6-2/3 innings, striking out seven but walking six and allowing five runs before giving way to the bullpen. Ron Herbel provided two innings of scoreless relief to finish out the contest.

The Bucs won their ninth straight game in blowout fashion with a 9-1 win over the reeling Phillies. After trailing 1-0 early, the hosts dropped a four spot on starter Rick Wise (7-14), with back to back doubles from Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen driving in three of the runs. The latter would drive in another later in the game with a second two bagger. Gene Alley (13) added a long ball to lead off the 8th. Steve Blass (8-8) would go the distance, scattering six hits and striking out the same number.

New York continued to roll Saturday with an 8-3 win, scoring four in the first inning with four consecutive two out singles off Ken Holtzman (12-13) and coasting to their eighth victory in the last ten games. Clendenon would homer (25) again with a solo blast in the 8th inning. Jerry Koosman (12-7) tossed all nine innings for the victors, whiffing nine Cubs' swingers along the way.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh ran its season high winning streak to double digits in a game played close to the vest, 2-1. Rookie Fred Cambria (3-0) pitched a stellar seven innings to keep his team in the game. Back to back homers from Al Oliver (15) and Stargell (30) would provide the only offense. Recently acquired lefty George Brunet would provide 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while mainstay Dave Guisti recorded the final two outs for his 24th save of the season.

Catching up with the Metropolitans

This week, the Mets have been engaged in a big series at Busch Stadium with the defending World Champion, but currently third place Cardinals, whom they held a 3-1/2 game lead heading into the four game set. Accordingly, New York has taken the first three games of the series to open up a 6-1/2 game lead.



In the series opener, Jerry Koosman bested Nellie Briles, 3-1. Wayne Garrett was the offensive star with a homer (10th) and a triple. Art Shamsky also homered (12th) for the visitors.



Tuesday's affair took 11 innings for New York to come out on top, 4-2, despite a 15 hit attack from the home team. Bud Harrelson was the hero in this tilt with a two run triple in the second extra frame after St. Louis tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Lou Brock's two out, bases empty home run off Ron Herbel, who had just been acquired from the Padres. Gibson went 7 innings, giving up two runs.

Wednesday was Tom Seaver's turn in the rotation, who took his 20-6 and 1.91 league leading ERA to the mound. Like the Cards' ace the night before, Seaver would leave with no decision, giving up a pair of runs over 7 innings of work before being lifted for a pinch hitter. It would take extra innings again after the guests tied the score in the 8th at 2-2. Cleon Jones got the big hit in the 10th with a two out single for the gamewinner.

The hosts avoided the sweep in the finale with a complete game from lefty Steve Carlton, cruising to a 6-1 win. Joe Torre smacked two homers that drove in 4 runs to pace St. Louis. Gary Gentry went the distance for New York while taking it on the chin for his 8th loss in 19 decisions. Nevertheless, the Mets left town with more distance than they arrived with at 5-1/2 games over the third place Cardinals.

NL East Pennant Race

With the other teams counting down their magic number, the Mets and Pirates are engaging in a classic pennant race in the NL East. The upstart Buccos have won 8 straight and stand 2-1/2 back of the second half surging Metropolitans.

AL Blasts Senior Circuit for 3rd straight win in Mid-Summer Classic

Carl Yastrzemski launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Riverfront Stadium as
the American League club, running on all cylinders, ripped the National
League team by a large 15 to 2 margin.
 
Yastrzemski was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors.  He stroked a one-base hit in
the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 4th inning and bombed a two-run
dinger (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th inning.  American League bats were
hot in the 9th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits.  American League
finished with 20 hits while National League ended up with 10.  
 
Dave McNally(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Phil Niekro(0-1)
took the loss in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits
and no walks.
