The spectacular Baltimore Orioles tallied 4 runs in the 6th inning and
defeated the Washington Senators by a score of 6 to 2 at R.F.K.
Stadium.

Baltimore took the lead for keeps in the 5th inning scoring one runner.
Brooks Robinson tripled. Dave Johnson stepped up to the plate and he hit a
sacrifice fly scoring the run. Baltimore totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.

Jim Hardin(5-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
George Brunet(1-6) was hit with the loss. Baltimore now has a record of a
division leading 50-23. With this loss, Washington has a 3-7 record of late,
37-35 overall.

Mel Stottlemyre pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium as the New York
Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by the count of 3 to 1.

New York came up with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. The early run support proved
sufficient for Stottlemyre(5-6) and New York. That was all the run support
Stottlemyre required. Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.

Ken Brett(2-5) took the loss. New York now has a record of 39-32. With this

Carl Yastrzemski cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox beat the

Ray Culp(6-7) delivered a fine performance for Boston. He went 7 innings
surrendering 7 hits and no walks. Boston ended up with 13 hits for the game
while New York had 8.

Vicente Romo recorded the save, his 2nd. The loss was charged to Stan
Bahnsen(10-4). He was unable to control the Boston offense and allowed 9
hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

With this win, Boston has a 35-34 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the

Cookie Rojas hit 2 doubles as the Kansas City Royals won at Municipal Stadium
in dramatic fashion over the California Angels, the final score, 5 to 4.

The deciding run was scored by Kansas City in the bottom of the 9th. Hawk
Taylor reached on an error. Bob Lemon then called for a steal which was
successful. Lou Piniella then was walked intentionally. Ed Kirkpatrick was
up next and he drew a walk to load the bases. Paul Schaal stepped into the
box and stroked a base-hit making Kansas City victorious to the delight of
the the home town crowd. Both teams totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.

The win was credited to Bob Johnson(5-2) who went 1 inning allowing 1 run.
Paul Doyle(1-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 2
walks without retiring a batter.

In a dramatic ending the California Angels staged a comeback and held on to
win over the Kansas City Royals by the count of 8 to 6.

California came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning when they tallied 5 runs on 6 hits. The critical plate appearance was
by Billy Cowan who silenced the stadium when he slapped a base-hit which was
good for two runs. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Kansas City could
not get the win.

Eddie Fisher(6-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Ken Tatum was credited with his 13th save. Ken Wright(1-4) was the
loser in relief. He gave up 4 hits and no walks without retiring a batter.

Bob Lemon was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'

CLEVELAND AT DETROIT

In a game for the baseball purist, Earl Wilson(8-2) and Sam McDowell(8-7)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Detroit Tigers finally emerged
victorious over Cleveland Indians, 2 to 1.

Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 4 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Wilson and Detroit.
That was all the run support Wilson required. After the 1st inning, neither
team was able to score.

John Hiller earned the save, his 2nd.

Graig Nettles added four ribbies to his seasonal total with one swing of the
bat at Tiger Stadium where the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 8 to
4.

Mike Paul(4-2) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He was
reached for 6 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Cleveland finished with
15 hits while Detroit ended up with 10.

Mike Kilkenny(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Cleveland now has a record of
37-33. With this loss, Detroit has a 5-5 record of late, 34-36, worst in the
division overall.

Tom Hall mowed down 10 Chicago batters at Comiskey Park as the Minnesota Twins
beat the reeling Chicago White Sox by the count of 7 to 4.

Hall(9-1) pitched a fine game. He went 7 innings allowing 7 hits and 1 walk
and served up 3 'big flies'. Hall got help from Ron Perranoski who pitched
great and earned his 9th save.

The loss was charged to Joel Horlen(5-7). He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of
work. 'He was really impressive today,' Horlen said of his counterpart.
'Our guys were just swinging at air.'

At Comiskey Park the Chicago White Sox were able to stop their 7 game losing
streak and outscored the Minnesota Twins 4 to 1.

Chicago jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they scored
2 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring was all that Barry Moore(5-6) needed.
Chicago banged out 8 hits on the afternoon.

Moore got help from Wilbur Wood who earned his 11th save. Dave Boswell(3-7)
absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 4 to 1 at
County Stadium.

Oakland brought 3 runs across the plate in the 3rd inning. That early scoring
was all that Diego Segui(3-3) needed. Oakland had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Jim Grant earned the save, his 11th. The loss was charged to Bobby
Bolin(4-7). It was another victory for Oakland at County Stadium. Now their
winning streak stands at 6 games.

Chuck Dobson delivered 9 solid innings as the sizzling Oakland Athletics
defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 2 to 0 at County
Stadium.

Dobson(7-8) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits
and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.55 to 4.22. Both teams
finished the game with 6 hits.

Al Downing(1-4) was the loser. He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 7 and 1/3
innings. No one has been able to stop Oakland lately as they lengthened
their winning streak to 7 games. John McNamara was happy with his team's
performance of late - 'They're playing solid ball right now' he said. 'Let's
hope they can stay focused.'
