May Comes to a Close-AL

Baltimore and Minnesota have a firm grasp on the AL Divisions and seem poised for an ALCS rematch. The Yankees have pitched their way into contention, although their average offense will probably keep them from seriously challenging in the East. In the West, supposed contenders California and Oakland have struggled offensively and posted losing records through the first two months of the season, allowing the might Twins to breeze out to an 8-1/2 game lead despite a sluggish April.

May Comes to a Close --NL

Cincinnati goes on a 14 game winning streak to take over the West while the Braves, Giants and Dodgers try to keep pace. Pittsburgh has shaken off a slow start and is closing in on the surprising Phillies in the East. Philadelphia recently lost Don Money and Johnny Briggs to injury that has just decimated the offense over the last week.

Jim Wynn hit one over the fence at Shea Stadium where the Houston Astros beat
the New York Mets 4 to 3.

Houston scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. Wynn smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' (his 10th of the season). New York was retired without difficulty
in the bottom of the 9th.

Jim Bouton(2-4) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Fred Gladding
earned the save, his 10th. Ray Sadecki(2-3) was hit with the loss.

With this win, Houston has a 22-27 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With
this loss, New York has a 4-6 record of late, 24-23 overall.

HOUSTON AT NEW YORK

Homeruns- D.Rader-2(8th), J.Pepitone(14th)

Doug Rader launched 2 homeruns at Shea Stadium where the Houston Astros beat
the New York Mets 3 to 2.

Rader was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in
the 2nd inning, lined a base-hit in the 4th inning and delivered a solo blast
(his 8th of the season) in the 6th inning. New York had a chance in the 9th
but they came up short.

Don Wilson(2-3) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Fred Gladding
recorded his 11th save. Jim McAndrew(1-3) suffered the loss. He served up 3
homeruns in his 7 innings.

Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6 to 1.

St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Los Angeles went ahead in the top
of the 3rd inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. That early run support
was enough for Sandy Vance(5-3) and Los Angeles. Los Angeles had 10 hits
overall, while St. Louis had 7.

Mike Torrez(3-5) was hit with the loss. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 7
innings.

score of 2 to 0.

Nash gave a fine effort for Atlanta. He went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3
hits and 7 walks. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.

Billy Williams smacked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI at Wrigley Field as the
Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 12 to 5.

Williams was a one-man wrecking crew. He clubbed a three-run home run in the
1st inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 2nd inning, hit a single in the
4th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 11th of the season) in the 6th

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Oliver. He smashed a two-run homer in the 3rd inning, smashed a
solo-shot out of the park (his 8th of the season) in the 5th inning and
tripled in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh had a total of 9 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Bob Moose(5-3) who allowed 2 runs in 6 innings. Luke
Walker earned the save, his 1st. Juan Marichal(4-2) ended up with the loss.
He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
