WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Ray Fosse blocked the plate, saving a run!

Carl Yastrzemski launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Riverfront Stadium as
the American League club, running on all cylinders, ripped the National
League team by a large 15 to 2 margin.

Yastrzemski was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors. He stroked a one-base hit in
the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 4th inning and bombed a two-run
dinger (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th inning. American League bats were
hot in the 9th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits. American League
finished with 20 hits while National League ended up with 10.

Dave McNally(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Phil Niekro(0-1)
took the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits
and no walks.

Buford enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He singled in the 3rd inning, cracked
a two-run shot (his 13th of the season) in the 4th inning, delivered a
one-base hit plating a run in the 5th inning and doubled in the 9th inning.
The Baltimore offense poured it on, scoring in 8 of the 9 innings.

Tom Phoebus(9-2) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. Denny
McLain(0-3) ended up with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 4
walks in 5 innings.

With the win, Baltimore continued their winning ways; their streak now stands
at 6 games and counting. 'It seems we can't lose these days', Earl Weaver
volunteered after the game. Then after a moment to reflect he lamented, 'Oh
great! Now I've gone and jinxed us!'

Ray Culp pitched a complete game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as they scored 3 runs

Dunning(1-2) suffered the loss. He allowed Boston 6 runs in 4 and 2/3

3 runs on 3 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for
Simpson(12-3) and Cincinnati. That was all the run support Simpson required.
Cincinnati had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Jim Nash(7-9) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm

managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Chris Short(4-10) took the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 3 walks in 2
