Reds stay alive




Jim McGlothlin lost a no-hitter and shutout in the 9th as Tommie Agee tripled and scored, but the righty pitched the game of his life to give Cincinnati life for another day. Lee May powered the offense of the Big Red Machine with a homer and three RBI.

Jim McGlothlin took a no-hitter into the 9th inning and Lee May touched them
all and had 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets by the
score of 5 to 1 at Shea Stadium.

May had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning, doubled plating
two runs in the 3rd inning and blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season) in
the 9th inning. Cincinnati had a total of 9 hits for the game.

McGlothlin(1-0) allowed 1 run on the game. The right-handed McGlothlin lost
his chance for a no-hitter when Tommie Agee tripled with nobody out in the
9th inning. Gary Gentry(0-1) was hit with the loss.

Metropolitans stun reeling Reds




Donn Clendenon clinched the series MVP should New York clinch upon returning to the Big Apple with a two run homer, run scoring triple and a double to put another wrecking ball into Cincinnati's dream of a shot at the World Series. Jerry Koosman shut down the powerful Big Red Machine, allowing one run over 8 innings. Lee May's two run blast in the 9th would only make the game appear closer.

Jerry Koosman delivered 8 solid innings as the New York Mets defeated the
Cincinnati Reds by the score of 5 to 3 at Riverfront Stadium.

Donn Clendenon had a good day at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger (his
2nd of the season) in the 1st inning, tripled plating a run in the 6th inning
and doubled in the 8th inning. For the game New York out-hit Cincinnati 8 to
4.

The victory was credited to Koosman(1-0) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run.
Jim Merritt(0-1) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 4 hits in 5 and
1/3 innings.








Birds fly out of Metropolitan with 2-0 lead




After Baltimore tied the game with a seeing-eye single in the 9th, Terry Crowley launched a pinch-hit home run in the 12th and Eddie Watt got the final three outs to send the O's home a win away from a sweep of the ALCS and a trip to the World Series.

The Baltimore Orioles edged the Minnesota Twins in 12 innings at Metropolitan
Stadium by the score of 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Baltimore was victorious in
the 12th inning. Terry Crowley cracked a solo homerun (his 1st of the
season). This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as
the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

The winning pitcher was Marcelino Lopez(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Lopez got help from Eddie Watt who earned his 2nd save. The loss was charged
to Stan Williams(0-1) in relief.

The New York Mets nipped the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 3 at Riverfront Stadium in a
hard fought contest.

New York took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The victory went to Tom Seaver(1-0) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Seaver got help from Tug McGraw who was credited with his 1st save. The loss
was charged to Gary Nolan(0-1). He gave up 3 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Seaver, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'








ALCS Opener Goes to Birds




The postseason is under way as Baltimore invades Metropolitan Stadium to avenge last season's ALCS upset by the host Twins.
