New York rolls over slumping Reds

The homestanding New York Mets manhandled Cincinnati 7-0 for the second consecutive night at Shea Stadium. After downing their guests 6-1 in the series opener, Gary Gentry (7-4) tossed a five-hit shutout to send the struggling Reds to their fourth straight defeat.

Dave Marshall cracked a three run blast (4) over the fence in the first and the hosts never looked back. Ken Boswell sent a solo shot out to right in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead against opposing starter Wayne Simpson (8-3), who lasted just six innings.

Gentry was not untouchable, but got the big out when he needed it, stranding ten baserunners. The visitors loaded the bases in the opening stanza with two away, but Bernie Carbo struck out to end that scoring opportunity. Another two out rally came in the sixth inning, when Lee May was hit by a pitch and Carbo walked. This time, Tommy Helms killed the potential rally by popping out to left field.

The Mets put the game out of reach with a second three run inning in the seventh. Bud Harrelson's two run single to center highlighted the uprising. Cincinnati reliever Ray Washburn was hammered, giving up five hits while only managing to get two outs before being mercifully removed in favor of Tony Cloninger, who finished out the affair in scoreless fashion. New York compiled eleven hits for the game.

Metropolitans send Reds to third straight defeat

Strat-O-Matic Report

June 16, 1970--New York--The homestanding New York Mets continued to cool down the NL West Division leading Cincinnati Reds with a 6-1 win at Shea Stadium. A five run explosion in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 deadlock. Jim McAndrew took it from there, going the distance for the hosts, allowing just five hits along the way.

The guests dropped their third straight on the current roadtrip after watching a 13 game win streak end over the weekend in Philadelphia. Cincinnati led briefly with a run in the first behind a Pete Rose homer over the right field fence.

That lead was quickly erased thanks to Cleon Jones' (left) first of two triples on the night that drove in Tommie Agee, who had led off the bottom half of the opening frame with single.

Jim Merritt was chased from the box early even though all the runs in the inning were unearned due to second baseman Tommy Helms error on a Joe Foy grounder to start the winning rally. Bud Harrelson smacked a two run double, Jones tripled, and Donn Clendenon singled, all after two were out, to break the game open.

McAndrew kept the potent Reds' offense at bay the rest of the evening. The righty finished strong, not allowing a baserunner after walking Lee May to lead off the seventh.
