5-1/2 hours later...




Expos down Mets, 3-2 in 17 innings. It is inevitable when you have your sights on playing a couple of quick games in the morning before getting ready for work that the two games will be one long, extra inning game.

John Bateman cracked a homer as the Montreal Expos outscored the New York Mets
in 17 innings 3 to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Montreal was victorious in the 17th
inning. Bateman banged out a single. Ron Brand came to the plate and laid
down a sacrifice bunt. Bobby Wine then doubled giving Montreal the victory
and sending the 23,960 home-town fans home happy. Montreal had 15 hits for
the night.

John Strohmayer(2-2) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Don
Cardwell(0-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and no
walks in 1/3 of an inning.
