Wayne Simpson pitched 9 strong innings at Fulton Co. Stadium as the streaking
Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 6 to 0.

Cincinnati wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they scored
3 runs on 3 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for
Simpson(12-3) and Cincinnati. That was all the run support Simpson required.
Cincinnati had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Jim Nash(7-9) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm
hitting a good groove.' Simpson said after the game. 'I'm ready to start
another game tomorrow!'

Wes Parker had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at San Diego Stadium as the Los Angeles
Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres by the count of 8 to 6.

Don Sutton(9-7) had a steady outing. He was reached for 9 hits and 2 walks in
7 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns. Los Angeles totaled 12 hits on the
afternoon.

Sutton got help from Jim Brewer who earned his 13th save. Clay Kirby(3-14)
was hit with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Sutton said.

The New York Mets batters feasted on the Montreal Expos pitching at Shea
Stadium. The final score was a lop-sided 9 to 1.

Montreal never recovered after New York took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd
inning scoring one runner. New York had 14 hits for the afternoon while
Montreal had 6.

Ray Sadecki(7-4) went 8 innings allowing no runs for the win. Steve Renko(5-6)
was the losing pitcher. He was unable to control the New York offense and
allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Ken Holtzman mowed down 12 Philadelphia batters at Wrigley Field as the
Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 6 to
2.

Holtzman(9-7) looked very much in control throughout the day. He allowed just
4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings and served up 2 'big flies'. Neither team
managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Chris Short(4-10) took the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 3 walks in 2
and 1/3 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Holtzman -
except Philadelphia. Frank Lucchesi lamented, 'He just was 'on' this
afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a
good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'

PITTSBURGH AT ST. LOUIS

In a dramatic ending, the St. Louis Cardinals staged a comeback win over the
Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 6 to 5.

St. Louis had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
hits. Lou Brock led off and started the rally when he reached on an error.
After an out was recorded, Carl Taylor stepped in and he doubled which scored
a run. Richie Allen then was walked intentionally. Joe Torre came up and he
lined a single to load the bases. Joe Hague stepped into the box and doubled
making St. Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.
St. Louis had 13 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 10.

The victory went to Bob Chlupsa(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The
loss was charged to Dave Giusti(5-3) in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in
perseverance for you,' Hague noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a
while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And
it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'

Bob Watson connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Houston Astros
defeated the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by a score of 6 to 5 at
Houston The Astrodome.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Houston won the game in
the 10th inning. John Edwards drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Jay
Alou stepped up to the plate and he slapped a single. Joe Morgan then
stroked a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Houston and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans. San Francisco was out-hit by
Houston, 13 hits to 9.

George Culver(2-5) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jerry Johnson(1-5) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run
and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
