In a two run game the Boston Red Sox got by the Baltimore Orioles by the score
of 7 to 5.

Jim Lonborg(2-0) was solid if not spectacular. He was reached for 9 hits and
no walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Lonborg whiffed an impressive total of 7
Baltimore batters. Baltimore threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.

Vicente Romo earned his 1st save. Dave McNally(0-3) ended up with the loss.
He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work.

Earl Weaver was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

Tony Oliva slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the seemingly unstoppable
Minnesota Twins outscored the Chicago White Sox 9 to 7.

Minnesota scored 4 runs in the 6th inning when they had 4 base hits. The
highlight belonged to Bob Allison who made the crowd come alive when he laced
a one-base hit plating two runs. For the game Minnesota out-hit Chicago 14
to 8.

The victory was credited to Stan Williams(2-0) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing 1 run. Williams got help from Ron Perranoski who earned his 1st
save. Don Secrist(0-1) took the loss in relief.


DETROIT AT CLEVELAND

Mickey Lolich reeled off a total of 12 strikeouts as the Detroit Tigers
outscored the Cleveland Indians 4 to 1.

Lolich(2-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Cleveland batters. He surrendered only 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings seeing
his ERA drop from 5.92 to 4.45. Detroit had 8 hits for the night while
Cleveland had 4.

Tom Timmerman was credited with his 2nd save. Sam McDowell(1-1) was the
loser. Lolich was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good
command of all my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on.'

KANSAS CITY AT OAKLAND

Wally Bunker(2-3) and Al Downing(0-2) treated the Oakland fans to a fine
pitching duel at Oakland Co Stadium. The Kansas City Royals eventually
emerged as victors over the Oakland Athletics by the score of 2 to 1.

Kansas City scored 1 run in the 5th inning. Jackie Hernandez lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' (his 2nd of the season). Kansas City out-hit Oakland
for the game, 7 hits to 4.

Moe Drabowsky recorded the save, his 3rd.

23,520 fans watched an exciting game at Anaheim Stadium. The California
Angels topped the Milwaukee Brewers by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

The deciding run was scored by California in the bottom of the 8th. After two
were out Jay Johnstone tripled. Roger Repoz stepped up to the plate and he
banged out a single scoring the run. Milwaukee proved to be no trouble in
the 9th.

The win was credited to Eddie Fisher(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Bob Locker(0-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit
in 1 inning.

In a game for the baseball purist, Fritz Peterson(2-1) and Joe Coleman(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York Yankees finally emerged
victorious over Washington Senators, 2 to 1.

New York tallied 2 runs in the top of the 5th inning. Both teams finished the
game with 7 hits. Peterson got help from Jack Aker who earned his 1st save.

With this win, New York has a 8-7 record. They have been 4-6 lately.
Washington has a record of 5-6 after the loss.
