Blair World Series MVP
Baltimore center fielder Paul Blair was named World Series Most Valuable Player. Although known best for his speed and defensive wizardry, Blair hit .474 with five doubles, a pair of home runs, and nine RBI over the five games. Both of the homers came in game two at Shea Stadium, the second of which was a grand slam that turned the game into a 10-3 laugher that sent the Orioles home with a 2-0 lead in the series. Blair also drove in at least one run in four of the five games.

Orioles last ditch rally clinches championship
In a manner fit for a Hollywood script, the Baltimore Orioles scored five runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to claim the 1970 World Championship. Frank Robinson cracked his first postseason homer to tie the game and Boog Powell sent one into orbit toward left-center field to send the hometown crowd onto the field as he circled the bases. The unbelievable finish had the stunned but ecstatic fans screaming long after champagne had begun flowing in the home team clubhouse, but was only fitting for a team that had rung up 114 regular season victories and had appeared invincible throughout the postseason, losing just one game in each series.
There was a clear nervous murmur starting to permeate through the stands after New York built a 5-0 lead against Mike Cuellar, who was denied a fourth postseason victory with his first subpar outing of the postseason. Cuellar had gotten the call after Earl Weaver scratched Jim Palmer for the second straight start, this time wanting to keep the opposing lefty swinging batters on the bench.
With Tom Seaver on the mound holding the Orioles in check, it appeared that the Mets would send the series back to Shea Stadium for game six. Tommie Agee started the scoring with a solo homer in the third inning. Agee and Bud Harrelson had three hits each to set the table throughout the game. Harrelson would drive in Agee in the fifth as the duo reached on back-to-back doubles. Cleon Jones followed with a single to provide a three run cushion.
Agee and Harrelson would be in the middle of it again in the seventh frame. Seaver and Agee singled, with the runners hustling for the extra base. Harrelson lifted a fly ball deep enough to score Seaver, and Agee scored when Paul Blair's throw to third got away to push the lead to 5-0.
The hosts finally broke through the scoring column in the bottom of the frame with an unearned run. Blair doubled and scored when Harrelson throw to first on a grounder by Robinson sailed over the head of first baseman Donn Clendenon.
Seaver pitched one out deep into the ninth after walking the leadoff batter but striking out pinch hitter Terry Crowley. That would be the last out recorded in the series. Ron Herbel entered and proceeded to cough up the lead. Both runners scored on a double by Blair to cut the deficit in half. Robinson followed with the game tying blast. Tug McGraw entered only to see a 1-1 screwball leave the yard off the powerful bat of Powell.

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, Baltimore Orioles came
from behind to top New York Mets, 6 to 5.
Baltimore won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning when they
tallied 5 runs on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Frank Robinson who
came through for the home fans when he cracked a two-run shot (his 1st of the
season). Baltimore won despite being out-hit by New York 11 hits to 8.
The victory went to Jim Hardin(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Tug
McGraw(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a
batter allowing 1 hit and no walks.
Hardin and Paul Blair were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the
great come from behind victory. As Earl Weaver noted, 'A win like this one
can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans,
the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Shamsky blast keeps Mets alive
Just like game three, the guests scored in their half of the first. However, the pair of runs scored without benefit of a hit off Baltimore starter Tom Phoebus, who got the nod from manager Earl Weaver in order to give Jim Palmer an extra day's rest with the series clinch just one win away. Phoebus did not give up a hit, but lasted just five innings due to issuing seven walks.
Baltimore knotted the score with single runs in the first and third innings off lefty Jerry Koosman. Paul Blair walked and Merv Rettenmund doubled to set the stage for Frank Robinson, who drove in the first run on a grounder to second. Rettenmund, now htting .625 in the postseason, doubled again in the third to drive in the tying run.
The home team pushed across the go ahead run in the sixth inning with another two bagger, this time from Davey Johnson. With the stellar Baltimore bullpen rested, it looked as if the visitors had taken the final dagger.
Dick Hall was called on for the long relief stint and tossed two scoreless frames before being touched up by Shamsky in the eighth inning. The runs were unearned as Tommie Agee scored after reaching on a rare error by sure-handed shortstop Mark Belanger.
McGraw would finish things off, allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way. Hits were hard to come by, with the Orioles outhitting their opponent, 5-4.
Game 5 will pit Tom Seaver against Palmer.

O's outlast New Yorkers
It looked like the visiting New York Mets were determined to get back into the series, but the pitching staff could not hold off the relentless Baltimore attack and dropped a hard fought contest 5-4.
Orioles manager Earl Weaver sent a lefty to the mound for the second straight day, which is a clear disadvantage for their opponent, who was a mere 24-23 against southpaws during the regular season, versus a 69-46 record against righties. Still, with lefty hitting slugger Art Shamsky on the bench for the second straight day, the guests came out of the gate fast and posted a three spot in the first inning. After the first run of the game scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded, third sacker Joe Foy slammed a single into the left to plate the other two runs.
Gary Gentry took the mound for New York, but immediately gave two of the runs back on Boog Powell's 4th postseason homer. Gentry would prove ineffective, coughing up two more runs in the third inning before being given an early shower in favor of bullpen mate Danny Frisella. Game two hero Paul Blair doubled in the tying run and eventually scored the go ahead run later in the inning on Brooks Robinson's two out single.
Meanwhile, McNally settled down and held the Mets in check until the eighth inning. Donn Clendenon doubled to lead off the frame, his third hit of the game. Foy struck again one out later with a two bagger for third RBI of the contest. Suprisingly, Weaver stayed with his starter, who rewarded the decision by stranding the go ahead run at second.
The deadlock was short lived, though the tie would be broken without the benefit of a base hit. Nolan Ryan issued a one out walk to Frank Robinson, his fourth free pass in two plus innings of work, so Tug McGraw was summoned from the pen to face Powell. However, he would suffer from the same problem with wildness as his predecessor. A passed ball moved Robinson up a base and Powell was walked intentionally. Another walk to Brooks Robinson loaded the bases for the second straight inning. This time, Ellie Hendricks cashed in the winning run with a fly ball to right field.
A revived McNally set the Mets down meekly in order to finish what he started, surviving with nine strikeouts to help offset the nine hits and a walk he surrendered.

Paul Blair launched 2 homeruns at Shea Stadium where the Baltimore Orioles
beat the New York Mets by the score of 10 to 3.
Blair really lit it up for Baltimore. The New York fans let him have it for
what he did to their boys. He doubled in the 1st inning, smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 6th inning and cleared the bases with a Grand
Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Baltimore totaled 11
hits on the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Mike Cuellar(3-0) who allowed 1 run in 5 innings. Tom
Seaver(2-1) was hit with the loss. Despite the loss, he struckout 8
Baltimore batters in 5 and 2/3 innings.
'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Blair said. 'That's
it'

Bombs away as O's power over New York ace
Thursday, December 2, 2010
Cuellar ALCS MVP, Clendenon takes NL honors
Donn Clendenon led the way for New York as they upset a Reds team that won 102 regular season games in the National League playoffs. Clendenon homered twice and drove in 6 runs as the Mets took the first two games of the series on the road. By the time the smoke cleared at Riverfront Stadium, the righty slugger was 4 for 9 and the Mets headed home just one win away from the franchise's first ever World Series birth, which they accomplished in game 4.
Palmer spins two hit gem as O's take series opener
Jim Palmer worked around 5 free passes by allowing just two hits and Merv Rettenmund slammed a roundtripper as Baltimore defeated the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in Game 1 of the 1970 World Series. Rettenmund got his second start of the postseason with lefty Jerry Koosman on the mound and continued to make the most of his platoon opportunities, going 4 for 5 with two doubles in addition to the home run. Koosman struggled throughout and was fortunate to strand several runners, allowing 7 hits and 6 walks in just five innings of work. The Orioles left 13 men on base for the game. However, Palmer took advantage of two twin killings when the Metropolitans did get a rally started, and cruised the rest of the way to save the bullpen arms for another day to even his postseason record at 1-1.

The New York Mets nipped the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 3 at Shea Stadium in a hard
fought contest.
Tom Seaver(2-0) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He went
5 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. Seaver recorded 7 strikeouts.
Cincinnati had 8 hits in the game while New York had 5, but New York had the
more timely hits.
Seaver got help from Tug McGraw who earned his 2nd save. Gary Nolan(0-2) was
the losing pitcher. He surrendered 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Orioles edge Twins, ticket punched to Fall Classic
Boog Powell smacked two homers to account for the offense and Mike Cuellar provided 7-1/3 innings of shutout pitching to avenge last season's upset by the Twins as the Orioles take the ALCS 3-1 with a 2-1 win over Minnesota. |
