Mets slip by Reds to face Birds in World Series




Gil Hodges pulled the right strings, lifting his ace, Tom Seaver, in the 5th inning trailing 3-2 for a pinch hitter that fueled the winning rally as the Metropolitans edged the Reds to clinch the franchise's first ever trip to the World Series.

The New York Mets nipped the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 3 at Shea Stadium in a hard
fought contest.

Tom Seaver(2-0) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He went
5 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. Seaver recorded 7 strikeouts.
Cincinnati had 8 hits in the game while New York had 5, but New York had the
more timely hits.

Seaver got help from Tug McGraw who earned his 2nd save. Gary Nolan(0-2) was
the losing pitcher. He surrendered 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 and 2/3 innings.
