Baltimore lefty Mike Cuellar was named MVP of the 1970 American League playoffs. Cuellar earned the victory in each of his two starts, including tossing 7-1/3 shutout innings in the clinching game 4 of the series. Cuellar finished the series with a 2.57 ERA and 12 strikeouts over 14 innings.
Donn Clendenon led the way for New York as they upset a Reds team that won 102 regular season games in the National League playoffs. Clendenon homered twice and drove in 6 runs as the Mets took the first two games of the series on the road. By the time the smoke cleared at Riverfront Stadium, the righty slugger was 4 for 9 and the Mets headed home just one win away from the franchise's first ever World Series birth, which they accomplished in game 4.
