As teams were opening their seasons, Philadelphia and St. Louis pulled off the blockbuster that eluded the entire 1969-70 offseason. Disgruntled Phillies star Dick Allen finally found a taker for his services, and well-documented baggage in the retooling Cardinals. However, the transaction created another disgruntled player as the star going the other way, outfielder Curt Flood, refused to report to the City of Brotherly Love. The deal still went down, so bad did Allen need to leave town, that his former team accepted a package of catcher Tim McCarver, outfielder Byron Browne, reliever Joe Hoerner, and a pair of minor leaguers. Philadelphia sweetened the Redbirds' side of the deal with reliever Jerry Johnson and second sacker Cookie Rojas.
Otherwise, the division swapped a few players amongst themselves and made a few minor trades and signings between leagues and with their counterpart division squads. Chicago dealt with the Phillies also, picking up outfielder Johnny Callison and a minor leaguer while sending pitcher Dick Selma and young outfielder Oscar Gamble the other way. Minor deals involved backup catcher swaps, as J.C. Martin was exchanged from the Mets for Randy Bobb. Reliever Rich Nye headed for St. Louis, while outfielder prospect Boots Day landed in the Windy City.
In the cold north, a youth movement seems afoot as the Expos dealt in fringe players. Swingmen were exchanged with the Braves as Jim Britton headed for Montreal for southpaw Larry Jaster. Joe Sparma begged his way out of Detroit, with righty reliever Jerry Robertson being the going price. Jack Hiatt was signed from San Francisco for cash considerations to handle some of the catching duties. Finally, reliever Ken Johnson was picked up as a free agent.
The Metropolitans also had a light offseason, but picked up what they hope will be some key pieces to the winning puzzle. Joe Foy was obtained to play third base, with promising young outfielder Amos Otis and Bob Johnson going to Kansas City. Pitcher Ray Sadecki and outfielder Dave Marshall were had from San Francisco for utility infielder Bob Heise and backup outfielder Jim Gosger.
Upstart Pittsburgh liked their roster so much that their only deals involved bullpen hopefuls and bench players, picking up Dennis Ribant while shipping Bo Belinsky to Cincinnati, while getting swingman Dave Giusti and catcher Dave Ricketts from the Cardinals for Carl Taylor and a minor leaguer.
Finally, St. Louis replaced Flood in center field with Jose Cardenal from Cleveland, who obtained Vada Pinson. A change of scenery for aging starters also came for George Culver from the Reds, who received Ray Washburn. Bullpen help is hopefully a result of bringing in lefty Billy McCool from the Padres for infielder Steve Huntz.

Offseason Dealing - AL East
It was the winter of content for the Baltimore Orioles, who did not do any dealing in the 1969-70 offseason. And who could argue with them after posting 116 wins in the regular season before being upset by Minnesota in the ALCS.
On the other hand, Cleveland cannot be blamed for trying as they added nine players and lost nine players in deals with five separate teams after a last place finish. The biggest deal was a 4 for 2 deal with the Twins, as the Indians added starting pitcher Dean Chance and swingman Bob Miller, plus a pair of young position players in outfielder Ted Uhlaender and slugging third baseman/outfielder Graig Nettles. The Northeners took a chance on a couple of arms looking for rebound years in Luis Tiant and Stan Williams.
The Tribe also swapped outfielders with the Cardinals, getting Vada Pinson for Jose Cardenal. Washington also consummated a deal that gave Cleveland reliever Dennis Higgins and southpaw starter Barry Moore in return for utility infielder Dave Nelson and relievers Horacio Pena and Ron Law. A single player deal sent minor league pitcher Steve Mingori to Cincinnati for outfielder Jay Ward. Finally, outfielder Roy Foster and infielder Frank Coggins was swapped with Milwaukee this spring for third baseman Max Alvis and ouufielder Russ Snyder.
The rest of the division was busy shifting around marginal players. Boston picked up a starter from the White Sox as they traded infielder Syd O'Brien for Gary Peters and catcher Don Pavletich. A swap of infielders with Detroit brought Tom Matchick to Beantown, while Dalton Jones headed to the Motor City. The Red Sox also released veteran reliever Ron Kline and sent catcher Russ Gibson to the Giants for cash considerations.
In addition to swapping for Jones, Detroit landed reliever Jerry Robertson from Montreal in exchange for Joe Sparma. Joe Niekro should provide better depth in the rotation, coming in for San Diego for Pat Dobson and utility infielder Dave Campbell. The Tigers also gave veteran shortstop Tom Tresh a pink slip.
The Yankees seemed to be busy acquiring as many first baseman as possible. A deal with the Astros swapped first sacker/catcher Curt Blefary while shipping out Joe Pepitone. Danny Cater was brought in from Oakland for pitcher Al Downing and catcher Frank Fernandez. Lefty swinging Pete Ward was obtained from the White Sox for a minor leaguer. Rick Bladt was sent over by the Cubs to complete a September deal involving Jimmie Hall.
Finally, Washington joined the Indians with a high turnover rate. Besides the three players obtained from Cleveland, southpaw starter George Brunet arrived from Milwaukee while reliever Dave Baldwin headed to Wisconsin. John Roseboro was signed as a free agent to help with the catching duties. A swap with Minnesota netted lefty reliever Joe Grzenda for outfielder Brant Alyea. Utiilty infielder Zoilo Versalles finds himself unemployed after receiving his release from the Senators.

Junior Circuit Freshman May and Nagy Take Honors
A combat injury shortened Carlos May's stellar first full season in the big leagues, but the time he did have was enough to convince folks that he was the best new player and deserving of the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Despite not playing a game after August 8, the younger brother of Cincinnati Reds' All-Star first baseman Lee May smoked the ball around at a .311 clip with 19 longballs and 66 RBI over just 367 official at-bats.
Kansas City's Lou Piniella was runner-up for the award, receiving consideration for hitting .273, with 10 homers and 71 RBI as the Royals' regular cleanup hitter.
Boston brought up 21 year-old Mike Nagy and placed him in the rotation despite not pitching above Class A ball in the minors prior to the 1969 campaign. All the inexperienced right-handed tosser did was win 20 games against just 8 losses and compile a 2.67 ERA over 28 starts.
Ken Tatum also showed a lot in his inaugural season out of the California Angels bullpen. Despite not hitting the big time until mid-May, the righty was Lefty Phillips' go-to guy with a lead, and for good reason as he posted a miniscule 1.71 ERA and saved 20 games for a losing team.
NL Rookies Laboy and Griffin Honored
The expanding territory of major league baseball helped a 28 year-old first player get a chance and make the most of it. After toiling for ten years in the San Francisco and St. Louis minor league systems, the Montreal Expos made infielder Coco Laboy the 54th player taken in the expansion draft and wrote him in the lineup every day at third base. The native of Puerto Rico responded with a .278 average, 16 home runs and 85 runs batted in to garner the National League Rookie of the Year Award for the 1969 season.
Also receiving consideration were a pair of Pirates in Richie Hebner (.289/7/60) and Al Oliver (.248/24/62), who helped their squad to a strong finish before fading into third place. Atlanta catcher Bob Didier (.297, 28 2B) also turned some heads, as did Philadelphia outfield Larry Hisle with 28 homers in their inaugural campaigns.
A thin year for newcomers in the pitching ranks made Houston righty Tom Griffin (15-9, 3.24) an easy choice for NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year. The young gun helped keep the surprise Astros in the race for the Western Division flag through the last weekend of the season, whiffing nearly a batter an inning with 211 strikeouts in 214 innings.
New York reliever Jack Dilauro (4-4, 2.04, 1 save) also deserves mention.

Jackson and Cuellar Take AL Honors
Oakland Athletics outfielder Reggie Jackson receives the American League Award for Most Valuable Player. Exhibiting power and discipline at the plate, speed on the bases, and and the ability to cover territory and gun down would be advancing runners in the field, the lefty slugger was the clear cut choice. Power was exhibited with 45 home runs and 42 doubles, which resulted in a slugging percentage of .629 to lead the league in that category. With a batting average of .294 and 111 walks, Jackson reached base enough to also lead the league in runs scored with 126.
Frank Howard of Washington was second in the voting, with a major league leading home run total of 52 and 141 RBI.
On the mound, Mike Cuellar takes the Cy Young Award by leading the Junior Circuit in wins (24) and ERA (2.23) while establishing himself as co-ace of the vaunted Orioles pitching staff that carried the Eastern Division Champions to 116 regular season victories. Cuellar completed 14 of 39 starts with 4 shutouts. The lefty was most impressive during the month of June, where he went 6-0 in 7 starts and allowed as his ERA dipped from 2.19 to 1.97.
It was the year for southpaws, as consideration for the award also went to teammate Dave McNally (23-7, 2.63) and Cleveland's Sam McDowell (23-12, 2.32).
Giants Sweep NL Awards
Despite a disappointing fifth place finish, two San Francisco veterans were the best in the league at their respective positions. Willie McCovey received the league's Most Valuable Player Award. The Giants big first baseman, also known as "Big Stretch," had a very large season, hitting at .318 with 50 roundtrippers and 151 RBI. In drawing 102 free passes, McCovey reached base at a .429 clip.
Atlanta Braves' outfielder Hank Aaron finished a distant second with a very fine year in every respect. The slugger hit .293, smacked 40 homeruns and drove in 102 runs.
McCovey's teammate, Juan Marichal, garnered the Cy Young Award in a close contest with Los Angeles fireballer Bill Singer. The ace by the bay won 23 and lost just 6 times while posting a miniscule 1.60 ERA in 286 innings. In 36 starts, the "Dominican Dandy" finished 21 of those games and shutout the opponent 10 times.
Singer was also splendid, winning a like number of games against 9 losses with a 2.03 ERA and played an instrumental role in the Dodgers' Western Division championship.

Gibby Named Series MVP
Bob Gibson had what was, for him, a so-so season on the hill for the St. Louis Cardinals, going 18-13 with a 2.51 ERA. But it was clear from the final game of the season and the shut out of the Philadelphia Phillies to capture the division flag through the postseason that the form that led to a 1968 Cy Young Award had returned.
That was characterized by dominating mound performances over an offensive powerhouse such as the Minnesota Twins, who averaged 4.74 runs a game during the regular season. Gibson allowed just two runs (one earned)in his two series starts and make the consideration of the World Series MVP an easy matter. Over the entire postseason, the veteran righty was 3-0 with an 0.35 ERA, allowing 21 hits, striking out sixteen and walking just four batters in 26 innings of work.

Cardinals Are World Champions!
After claiming the final spot in the playoffs in the last game of the season, St. Louis lost just once in postseason play. A four run eighth broke a 2-2 tie and a late rally by the AL Champion Minnesota ballclub fell short to give the Redbirds the title, 4 games to 1. |

In a close game the St. Louis Cardinals registered 4 runs in the 8th inning
and got by the Minnesota Twins by the score of 6 to 4.
St. Louis had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Lou
Brock who brought a roar from the partisan Busch Stadium fans when he banged
out a single bringing in two baserunners. Minnesota had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.
Mike Torrez(1-0) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. Dick
Woodson(0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 4 runs and 3 hits in 1/3 of
an inning.

Cardinals Scratch Out Win to take 3-1 Series Lead
October 15, 1969--St. Louis--Bob Gibson has approached immortality as St. Louis stands just one win away from a World Championship. The righty won his second game of the series, allowing just one run in a complete game effort. As if that was not enough, he also scored the winning run after legging out an infield hit and scampered all the way to third base on a two base error. Lou Brock followed with a single to plate the difference maker. |

Twins Win in 13 Innings to Close Series Gap
Ocotber 14, 1969--St. Louis--A timely hit and run single by Rich Reese and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Cesar Tovar pushed across the go ahead run in the fourth extra frame to give Minnesota their first win of the Series. Ron Perranoski tossed two shutout innings to pick up the win. Jim Grant could not get the job done in consecutive games and took the loss after picking up the save in Game 2. St. Louis overcame a 3-0 deificit with three runs in the seventh inning. Lou Brock slugged a two run homer to right that broke up Twins' starter Jim Perry's shutout bid. |

In a close game the Minnesota Twins got by the St. Louis Cardinals in 13
innings by the score of 5 to 3.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Finally, Minnesota pulled the
game out in the 13th inning. After an out was recorded, Harmon Killebrew
started the rally when he drew a walk. Rich Reese followed and he delivered
a single. Cesar Tovar then worked the squeeze play to perfection which
scored a run. John Roseboro came up and he delivered a base-hit scoring the
final run of the inning. Minnesota had a total of 12 hits for the game.
The victory went to Ron Perranoski(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
The losing pitcher was Jim Grant(0-1) in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 1
walk in 2 innings.
High Flying Redbirds Win in a Pinch
October 12, 1969--Minneapolis--The Fall Classic is named so, in part, because it creates unlikely heroes. Whether it be a mediocre pitcher tossing a perfect game, or a so-so second baseman reaching immortality with a game winning blast, a clutch play in the World Series can make a man famous.
Vic Davalillo became just that in Sunday's second game as he came off the bench to belt a three run homer that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning as St. Louis went on to win the game, 6-4. Billy Martin had intentionally walked Julian Javier to bring up weak hitting shortstop Dal Maxvill, which triggered Cardinals' manager Red Schoendist to call on Davalillo, who swings from the left side. Martin countered with lefty Tom Hall to replace his starter, Dean Chance, who was held responsible for the pair of men on base. Schoendist elected to forego a counterpunch and Davalillo rewarded his confidence with one crack of the bat. Jim Grant was perfect in relief for three innings to save the game for starter Steve Carlton, who was rescued from defeat and awarded a victory despite giving up four runs in six innings of work. Harmon Killebrew homered for the first time in the postseason to give the Twins their advantage. St. Louis now heads home to Busch Stadium for the next three games with a 2-0 lead. |

Tim McCarver hit 2 doubles at Metropolitan Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals
beat the Minnesota Twins 6 to 4.
St. Louis had 4 runs cross the plate in the top of the 7th inning with the
help of 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Vic Davalillo who
silenced Metropolitan Stadium as he clubbed a three-run home run (his 1st of
the season). St. Louis won despite being out-hit by Minnesota 11 hits to 7.
Steve Carlton(2-0) went 6 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Carlton was
helped out by Jim Grant who recorded his 2nd save. Tom Hall(0-1) was charged
with the loss in relief.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Red Schoendienst said after the game. 'Carlton did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

He gave up 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
World Series Matchup Cardinals vs. Twins
Wednesday--October 8, 1969
Both teams are playing their best baseball of the year heading into this Fall Classic. With the sweep, St. Louis finally gets to set their rotation. Bob Gibson, who has been unscored upon in his last two starts, will get the ball from Manager Red Schoendist for Game 1 Saturday at Metropolitan Stadium. The Cardinals' ace righthander was 18-13 with a 2.51 ERA during the regular season.
The homestanding Twins will counter with Dave Boswell (14-12, 2.96). Minnesota's most consistent member of the rotation during the regular season, the righty was touched up for seven runs in Game 2 of the ALCS, a game his team won 9-7 en route to three straight victories over Baltimore.
Twins' skipper Billy Martin also announced that veteran Dean Chance (10-2, 2.54) will toss Game 2 and Jim Perry (12-11, 3.74) will take the hill for Game 3. The Redbirds will counter with southpaw Steve Carlton (16-8, 2.39) and Nellie Briles (12-13, 2.52).
Reese's Big Bat Brings Home ALCS MVP
Rich Reese of the AL Champion Minnesota Twins was named Most Valuable Player. Reese continued his hot hitting from the season, where he hit .359 with 18 homers and 74 RBI, into the postseason. The lefty swinging first baseman hit at a .429 clip, reaching base 8 of 14 plate appearances, knocked a double and home run, and tied Tony Oliva for the team lead in RBI with three.
