World Series Matchup Cardinals vs. Twins

Wednesday--October 8, 1969

Both teams are playing their best baseball of the year heading into this Fall Classic. With the sweep, St. Louis finally gets to set their rotation. Bob Gibson, who has been unscored upon in his last two starts, will get the ball from Manager Red Schoendist for Game 1 Saturday at Metropolitan Stadium. The Cardinals' ace righthander was 18-13 with a 2.51 ERA during the regular season.

The homestanding Twins will counter with Dave Boswell (14-12, 2.96). Minnesota's most consistent member of the rotation during the regular season, the righty was touched up for seven runs in Game 2 of the ALCS, a game his team won 9-7 en route to three straight victories over Baltimore.

Twins' skipper Billy Martin also announced that veteran Dean Chance (10-2, 2.54) will toss Game 2 and Jim Perry (12-11, 3.74) will take the hill for Game 3. The Redbirds will counter with southpaw Steve Carlton (16-8, 2.39) and Nellie Briles (12-13, 2.52).
