Cubs Win 8th Straight to Force Cards Hand

The never say die North Siders did all they could do with a 6-2 win over the New York Mets to force the St. Louis Cardinals to win their game this evening over the Phillies or face a one game playoff to decide the NL East representative in the inaugural NLCS. Bob Gibson will go for the Cardinals.

Fergie Jenkins was called on to pitch the Cubs into the position they now find themselves. The righty tossed 6-1/3 innings of two run baseball before giving way to the bullpen combination of Hank Aguirre and Ted Abernathy, who proceeded to hurl 2-2/3 innings of shutout relief work.

Billy Williams had three hits and drove in a run, while Jim Hickman slammed a solo homer to highlight the winners offensive output.
